Salman Taseer, Governor of the Pakistani part of Punjab has been shot by one of his bodyguards. Five other people were injured. The attack had occurred on Tuesday near a shopping center in Islamabad, which is popular with foreigners, it said. Salman Taseer was a leading member of the ruling party.
He had recently spoken out against the controversial blasphemy law of his country, after a Pakistani Christian was convicted of insulting the Prophet Mohammed to death. Radical Muslims in the country to defend the law and are therefore attacked critics.
